My name was called by a laughing star
In a voice I dreamed I had heard
Far across space through the vastness of night
Where dark stretches itself far.

(Can laughter come from a star?)

On an asteroid he had grown
All alone,
A child-flower nourished in an alien place
Who sought answers we could not give -
Forgive our helpless humanity!
It took a fox to teach you that
That which is essential is invisible
To the eye.

Desert sands continue to blow, and
I have no answers to give
Save a fox's word to an uncaring world
To comfort a crying star.

(For the Little Prince,
Wherever you are).
